Sustainable Family Communities with Bob Miller

Positively Powered with Amy Collette Featuring Bob Miller

Bob Miller's transformational moment came when he walked into an orphanage and met the kids who changed his life.  "That week hit me like an emotional brick. Nothing had touched my heart that deep in my life."  His visit started a journey to adopt two children and develop a visionary approach to poverty and orphan communities. After years traveling the world as a speaker and consultant, Bob says that "I would never have imagined a goal of adopting two children, but it has become the single most significant experience in my life."

Bob began to see the "developmental gap" between his adopted kids and the children who were still stuck in institutions or in poverty. There was a widening gap in social skills and education. He began to wonder how to get kids out of institutions, out of poverty, and into real families that are stable. "That's the seed that started our initiative."

Working with a group of experts, Bob started to understand that the way out of poverty was to develop sustainable family communities. What might be done so that kids don't wind up in the orphanage in the first place? How can these communities help not only themselves but help people create prosperity in their communities?

Takeaways

Bob's vision includes:

  • Creating a business that provides jobs, generates profits, and leave the ownership and profits in the communities. This is a unique in approach to helping people escape poverty.
  • Profits from the business build homes, clinics, and provide education. The communities create the services that they need. "Communities are designed to be economically self-sustaining, environmentally sustainable, food sustainable, and also socially sustainable."
  • Each community helps start new communities. It replicates itself, keeping more kids out of poverty and allowing families to adopt children.
